Protecting the Stormwater Management Act of 2007

Background

The Stormwater Management Act of 2007 addressed runoff--the rainwater that runs over parking lots and other hard surfaces poisoning creeks, rivers and then, you guessed it, the Chesapeake Bay. This bill also addressed the realities of growth and economic development AND HAD THE SUPPORT OF THE DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY.

Now, this bill and our hard work are under attack by some of those very same developers - it seems they would rather play politics by taking advantage of the upcoming election than do their fair share to restore the Bay.

Right now, your legislators are only hearing from these developers. Please contact your legislators. Tell them this is not the time to backslide and to stay strong on Stormwater Regulations. Please speak up NOW.

Playing Politics with Stormwater

Dear Delegate,
Don't let developers play politics with the Stormwater Regulations and poison our communities and our waters! Please stay strong on the new Stormwater Regulations.

1. Stormwater is the ONLY pollution source INCREASING pollution loads to the Bay and its rivers.

2. Builders worry about their costs of meeting treatment requirements; however, it will cost more to retrofit after-the-fact. Developers can share the burden now, or taxpayers can foot the bill later.

3. Developers have identified specific projects with potential problems; there is NO evidence that there are systemic or categorical problems with the rules.

4. Smart Growth is about more than just density and location. It is also about livability, aesthetics, green spaces, clean air and clean water, transit, walkability, etc. Increasing density without addressing these other key elements is not very "smart."

Let the regulations stand as written - requiring moderately higher treatment and allowing ample flexibility for redevelopment projects to meet those requirements in a number of ways.

I urge you to oppose weakening the strong standards we've put into place.
